The trio of tenor- und alto saxophonist Rissi, pianist Mazzola and percussionist Geisser play with intense concentration, the focal point often Rissi`s late Coltrane-derived tenor and the Taylor-like sweep of Mazzola`s piano. While the bulk of the pieces (excluding only unaccompanied solos and a brief treatment of BLUE MONK) are credited to all three musicians, usually a sign of collective improvisation, so strong is the sense of direction that some pieces sound like they have written heads.
The three seem to make demands on themselves and each other for precision of statement, and that discipline raises this above much current free jazz in which accord centres around the larger contours of a piece.
