about

The Q4 quartet deals in dark, rich colors and has a certain ascetic quality to its sound. The material seems to be folk-based and the themes sound almost Bartokian at times. But despite the folk/classical allusions and the austerity of sound this group really swings. Whether playing straight ahead, free or one of the tricky ensemble passages, there`s a free flowing buoyancy maintained by the rhythm section.
Both front line players play with passion and energy. The Way these two players work together is best demonstrated on ILAD RODAVLAS. On this track the rhythm section lays out. It opens with a solo by Rissi on alto. Then the folk-like theme is slated by both players. This is followed by a dual improvisation where both players contrapuntally explore the theme, spiralling around and dovetailing with each other.
This group knows when to turn on the heat and this balance between these two qualities is what makes this group interesting.
Robert Iannapollo, Cadence

Q4 enjoys a fresh, cheeky vitality that acknowledges earlier decades of improvised music as it incorporates the music of Shostakovich (STEPAN RASIN) and the more recent directions of Steve Lacy and Sun Ra.
The density of Q4`s sound can darken from transparent to opaque in seconds, the abundant tonal variety resulting from the multifaceted reedman Mathias Rissi and Peter Schmid, who play six different instruments between them.
As Rissi, the group`s founder/leader, solos free style over Schmid`s lyrical baritone and the pulsing bass and drums, performances evolve through a dynamic environment of shifting tempi and rhythms.
