about

Reissue of LYONS` BROOD in memoriam:
Dedicated to the three outstanding Swiss jazz musicians trumpet player JÜRG GRAU and the altosax players WERNER LÜDI and KURT GRÄMIGER, with whom I had the privilege to work together in different groups, from duo to orchestra.
Mathias Rissi

LYONS` BROOD is Mathias Rissi`s homage to the alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, who died in 1986. The composition is held together as a large form by the classical sonata scheme. The motivic and harmonic exposition through the horns is taken over and cadenced by the basses and the piano. Now in the development the core theme can be developed in a breakneck altosax-piano duo from unisono to all variations of the tutti. The recapitulation of the harmonic-motivic germs leads into a percussive firework in which the piano and then the winds are switched on in reduction of the sound parameters towards a target point. After a fermata, the hymn-like, calm finale is a summary of the motivic and harmonic guiding ideas of LYONS` BROOD.
Guerino Mazzola, 1989

The individual and collective improvisations are well ordered and structured by the very cleverly arranged pieces composed by Rissi. A helpful supplement is the scaled-down score of LYONS` BROOD, a composition dedicated to Jimmy Lyons, which makes it easier to follow the development of the piece. Even though the participants speak a similar 'language' to a certain extent, and have experience with freely improvised jazz, the diversity of musical forms of expression sometimes leads to fascinating frictions and noticeable tensions, which are particularly evident in the numerous collective improvisations.
Nick Liebmann, 1990
