ARTofTIME / Version 1990:
HORUS AND SETH (from the mythology of ancient Egypt):
The A-B-A-song-form is built around the central melody of the B part, a lucid line in E-flat-minor in a 5/4 metre. It sings the dawn of Horus and Rissi`s vital sound development on alto beautifully implores the God of saxophonists, reaching a splendid climax of the composition.
The surrounding two A parts are interpreted by very deep tenor keys, in a mysteriously slow tempo and in a extreme rubato. The starting part describes the incarnation of Seth and culminates into a devilish bass solo by Thomas Hirt, a masterpiece of coherent expression, indeed.
The second A part is a reprise of the first one and initiates the incineration of Seth. Like the first one, its melodic line lives in a D-flat-major-gypsy-scale and gives the impression that Seth is omnipresent, though invisible on the calm surface of sounds. Perfectly matching the dualistic principle of good and evil, this melody is a variation of the B-part-melody. This concluding A part enters in order to take over the energies of a sparkling dialogue between percussion, bass and piano, which, after the solistic development in the B part, is brought into life by drummer Pit Gutmann – a musician of extremely rich colours who performs as if everything were rhythm.
